Wow – cutting it a little close this year….it’s almost 2014 already (4 days) so I thought it high time to post my top 10 tracks of 2013. Complementing the Spotify playlist this year as the songs I want to post all seem to be on SoundCloud. Including one that isn’t on Spotify.
Last year was a bit of a cop out – I just wrote a list, no commentary, no insight, no reason for choices, just a list. So this year I’ve added a little something for each track.
10. Waxahatchee – Misery Over Dispute
Waxahatchee is Katie Crutchfield, based out of Brooklyn, New York….and I heard this and immediately thought of Reality Bites – that scene where Ethan Hawke covers “Add It Up” by Violent Femmes. Equally angsty and seemingly bred of contempt, how could it possibly not feature on this list?
9. Chelsea Wolfe – We Hit A Wall
Doom folk, dark wave, whatever you want to call it – Chelsea Wolfe was a one to watch for 2013 and her latest album, Pain is Beauty, did not disappoint. Manifestation of a tortured soul…
8. La Femme – Sur La Planche
Cheating a little with this one…the song itself first crossed my path back in 2011 but it’s just now I feel they’re starting to build the following they deserve…and gain recognition. So their 2013 release, Psycho Tropical Berlin, is just the excuse I need to include them in this list. Also a one to watch for 2014. FINALLY.
7. James Blake – Retrograde
Deserving winner of the Mercury Music Prize this year – although really he possibly deserved it a year earlier – this track sets the hairs on your arms standing on end from the first note. Can’t wait for what this year has in store…
6. RRodd – With The Suit & Tie On (Marvin Gaye vs Justin Timberlake ft. Jay-Z)
A mashup that sounds like it was originally crafted that way – can’t let 2013 go by without a mention for JT, and this concoction took me by surprise so it’s the one that features. Possibly my favourite mashup ever.
5. Wild Belle – It’s Too Late
Another cheat as this band originally came up in 2012 as part of a post on the movie Pitch Perfect, and was also on an EP released that year – but thankfully they released their full length, Isles, on Sony in March of this year. So it’s safe to include this one from brother-sister duo Wild Belle here. Also still my favourite live show of 2013…
4. Annie Eve – Elvis
Originally actually posted “Body Weight” up here but on further listen, this is my favourite. 21 year old Annie Eve from North London – she’s playing a Communion show at St. Stephen’s Church in London next Feb.
2. Disclosure – You & Me (ft. Eliza Doolittle)
SO tough to pick a favourite track from their 2013 album….appearances from AlunaGeorge, Sampha, Sam Smith, Jessie Ware, London Grammar…but for me, this one wins out. Taking me back to the UK Garage vibes of my youth…
and at number 1….:
1. BANKS – This Is What It Feels Like
I’ve scrobbled this track a total of 24 times this year (2nd is James black with 13) and probably listened it to it many more…I really hope for big things for this girl – not least because she named the EP on which this song features after my home.
So that’s it for another year folks….but before I leave you with the playlist, anyone else notice how female vocal-heavy this year’s Top 10 is? 8 vs 2 as opposed to last year’s 3 vs 7! Just sayin’….
Until next time….
