Listen to this song, and let me know which legendary artist with a career spanning 5 decades as a renowned innovator and musical pioneer comes to mind:

Night Engine – I’ll Make It Worth Your While

Night Engine

Night Engine – Night Engine (2012)

When I heard this, I almost couldn’t believe my ears – and I wanted more.

The influence is clear, the resemblance uncanny, at least for me – but this is London four-piece Night Engine and the song is from their 5-track EP of the same name.

“Retro” doesn’t quite do it justice but the synth-led pop melodies and clear homage to the eighties is enough to crack even the toughest of broody East London indie demeanours.

How did I come across them? Well actually, they’re playing as part of the line-up of new artists billed for TuneUp UK – a series of shows around the UK curated by War Child and Tune Hotels. Night Engine play alongside King Charles and Champs at London’s Scala on 19th November, and the full line-up is:

Monday, 18th November – YUCK + Swiss Lips + Champs at Brighton Komedia
Tuesday, 19th November – KING CHARLES + Night Engine + Champs at London Scala
Wednesday, 20th November – EMBERS + Kult Country + Camp Stag at Manchester Ruby Lounge
Saturday, 23rd November – RACHEL SERMANNI + Bwani Junction + Vigo Thieves at Edinburgh Liquid Room
