I saw this band back in April at Cargo – still the best gig I’ve been to so far this year – and actually wrote about them briefly in a related post about the soundtrack to the movie Pitch Perfect, which featured the lead track from their debut album, Isles, “Keep You”.

So why are brother-sister duo Wild Belle coming up now? Well, it’s actually relevant in reference to the next post going up – aside from the fact that, as the gig of the year so far for me, and creators of one of my favourite albums of 2013 so far, I feel they deserve a feature all of their own rather than just a mention in a longer post, I wanted to draw a contrast between the two frontwomen.

So we need a reference point….

Natalie Bergman

Natalie Bergman

Wild Belle are Elliot & Natalie Bergman, they grew up in Chicago, and they make upbeat, reggae & ska-influenced pop. Perfect sound for Summer (if we had one in England), perfect sound for festival season and what seems to be a genuine sweetness and all-round happy-to-be-here attitude when performing on stage that you can’t help but feel just that when listening to them live – happy.

Elliot Bergman

Elliot Bergman

Frontwoman Natalie Bergman is just effortlessly cool but with absolutely no attitude or assumption that she deserves to be up there – she seems humble, sweet, understated, slightly bashful – and aside from that, her husky, easy, jazz-tinged voice made a dark Shoreditch bar feel like a beach in the Caribbean.

And Elliot? He sings – features as lead vocal on “When It’s Over” – he’s a legend on sax…AND comes across as an all-round good bloke too.

They both hung around after the gig to chat to us fan-folk, pose with us for photos and sign CDs.

So go and see them live, get the CD, or just listen. Here’s my favourite from the album:
