Billie Holiday – Summertime
I thought I’d write a few posts along a similar theme…focusing on the week I just spent in New York City, USA. I recently picked up an iPhone app called ‘Hipstamatic’ (thanks Sarah!), and got a little snap-happy while I was away, so I’m going to make use of the pictures and write a series of posts around them – this being the first one.
This is meant to be a music blog, though, and luckily music did play a part in most of the scenes that feature in the photos. Not all, unfortunately…so where they don’t, I’m going to edit in my own interpretation :). Don’t worry – I’ll make sure I break them up with some “normal” posts in between!
The first day wandering in the city I came across a beautifully bright café called Di Fiore Marquet Cafe on East 12th Street, just a couple of blocks from where I was staying. Sunny yellow walls, flower motifs on the windows and a chalk-scripted wine list on a mirror centre-piece; I could have stayed there all day but restricted myself to just one coffee.
Music of choice was 30s/40s-style jazz…particularly the type that involves trumpets so I’m going for Billie Holiday for this venue. I was going to link to Stormy Weather but a) it doesn’t really fit with the bright yellow hue, b) it was sunny pretty much the whole day and c) I’ve mentioned it before (The Lena Horne version). So instead:
I’d highly recommend popping by for an afternoon cup o’ whatever it is you fancy and something sweet beside…
