Exlovers – Wicked Game

Exlovers - You Forget So Easily

Some people say when you truly love a song, it’s impossible for a cover to do it justice (ok so I’ve never actually heard anyone say that, but I’m sure someone has…).

I’ve found a fair few over the past months – whether or not they’re as good as their respective subjects, they’ve often, in my mind, been a fresh and highly personal take on memorable originals (Florence & the Machine, The Postal Service, MC Illy, Solange, Feist to pick up a few of my favourites…)

When I saw this one come up I drew a sharp intake of breath and my initial thought was “how can anyone touch this diamond of a classic 80s pop masterpiece?!”. But I gave it a chance and… I love it. Not as much as the original, but in it’s own right.

It’s also up on the Ohinvertedworldclub’s Weblog at the moment as the band are playing their second Birthday Bash at The Old Queen’s Head tonight (13th Jan). I am completely gutted I can’t make it because of the snow…but that doesn’t mean you can’t go! Details on the London Gigs page.

The folk-pop quintet, who released their EP on Chess Club Records last year, have managed to craft a beautifully lo-fi and mellow update of one of my favourite songs of all time.

This is the original…in case you haven’t heard it:
