This has to be one of the smoothest tracks ever written.
I’d even go as far as to put it on a 1990s par with the likes of Let’s Get It On…or Sexual Healing (both Marvin Gaye).
Featured on D’Angelo’s 1995 album, Brown Sugar, the song’s intoxicating harmonies and velvety falsettos must’ve provided the musical backdrop for many a seduction during that decade…and possibly even still!
It’s a cover of a late-70s Smokey Robinson classic draped in effortless neo-soul (Maxwell, Erykah Badu, India.Arie are also often included within this sub-genre of rnb).
The album was the precursor to the critically acclaimed Voodoo, winner of two Grammy Awards (Best R&B Album and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance) in 2001, and also featured Brown Sugar, Lady and Me And Those Dreamin’ Eyes Of Mine. All available to stream on we7.com.
