Trick or treat?
I don’t know about you but when I think Halloween soundtrack, I think crazy metal – though I do appreciate that eerie & spooky is often what’s required, rather than frantic, scary & loud.
There unfortunately isn’t too much of it in my musical knowledgebase, but the tracks that are in there are, at least in my opinion, immense.
Here’re a few of them:
Slipknot – Wait and Bleed – this is hair-raising even when not accompanied by the visual of barcoded boiler suits and weird masks.
Taproot – Again & Again – a track that would just be a pretty heavy rock song if it weren’t for the frequent drops into demonic screamo.
Disturbed – Stupify – particularly excellent when it kicks in at about 1min.
P.O.D – Alive – This is the final triumph track, or the closing credits. Perfect for when the close-knit group of friends with the dark secret are safe once more…or are they?
Adema – Giving In – The video for this is a bit freaky if I remember correctly. People in weird costumes floating in glass boxes of water.
Deftones – Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) – Not frantic & loud Halloween in the same way as the above, more epic and powerful (not Grizzly Bear epic, in case you’re wondering).
A Perfect Circle – Judith – So much contempt and anger…a great “betrayal” track, and a far cry from my favourite of theirs, Three Libras.
Papa Roach – Last Resort – Desperation.
Three Days Grace – I Hate Everything About You – The title says it all.
and the final one…
Rage Against the Machine – Wake Up – No Halloween metal playlist would be complete without some Rage…
I haven’t added these to the musings spotify playlist for fear of scaring anyone who’s listening to it on shuffle out of their skin! But it has its very own baby one…I’ve called it Hallowemo, because I’ve gone a bit more nu metal than I had originally intended.
And if this is not to your liking…here’s a much less (i.e. NO) metal, bit more fun party playlist from blogtillyoudrop: b-uncut’s Halloween Playlist.

Luce x 2
Last one
Day Three: Luce
It’s a sunny one for the final instalment.
This is a great track for when the sun isn’t shining but you wish it was…or for when it is sunny and you just want a soundtrack for your day…or for a rubbish day to remind you hasn’t always been rubbish and it isn’t always going to be rubbish…or for when you’re having a good day and want a song that says it explicitly.
Luce – Good Day
I came across it during my MySpace trawling a few years back, but it’s since been used in 13 Going on 30 (a reasonable 64%) and on the OC.
It’s a bit more pop than rock, I guess, but is still connected with high school in my mind.
I have their album but haven’t really listened to it much aside from this song. I think I’m going to revisit it – I’ve been listening on spotify whilst writing this and it’s very much feel-good californian pop.
More on their MySpace.

Tx/Rx - Transmit/Receive
Teen high school rock week continues!
Day Two: Tx/Rx
I found this band around the same time as This Is Me Smiling – when I knew I wanted to work with music but I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I used to trawl through MySpace pages in my spare time looking for little-known bands that might be willing to let me play their tracks on my baby internet radio stream (it actually only lasted about a year because of licensing and royalty costs – but I loved it.)
I think people’ll either find the vocal high-impact and emotive or…grating. It isn’t smooth, in any sense of the word, and reminds me of Wheatus who sang Teenage Dirtbag, but at least it’s memorable.
Tx/Rx – Safest Place To Fall
This one’s upbeat and fun to sing along to and the other favourite of mine, User Friendly, is a bit darker and heavier. Both are up on their MySpace at the moment.
I doubt there’s much chance of them coming over here, but I have their first EP and am planning to be over in the US next year so who knows? Maybe if they’re still gigging I’ll get the chance to catch a live show at some point…

Reverie Sound Revue x 2
Ok, ok, I know it’s teen high school rock week and I’ll resume tomorrow, there are three, but I’m going to intersperse them with a couple of other bands I’ve come across this week.
This is the first of them, and is thanks to Seb – who seems to have caught me at exactly the moment when dreamy electro is where my head’s at. Specific tracks from Little Dragon, Phantogram…and now Reverie Sound Revue.
Reverie Sound Revue – MySpace
Their music is less impact-pop and more “amble around drinking in your surroundings”-pop. If you’re looking for a comparison, it’s along similar lines to Au Revoir Simone, but more layered and I prefer Lisa Lobsinger’s vocal (as well as her name!).
There’s quite a lot up on their last.fm page and my favourite of them has to be Rip the Universe – largely because of the light, slightly drum ‘n’ bass-y beat. You’ll hopefully know what I mean when you hear it.
The track doesn’t seem to be on their 2009 album, Reverie Sound Revue, released on Canadian label Boompa.
“Reverie Sound Revue is an otherworldly exploration of pop music, drenched in reverb, a soundtrack for zero-gravity.”

This Is Me Smiling x 2
Teen high school rock week has arrived!
Day One: This Is Me Smiling
I don’t think they’re teenagers, or in high school – at least they don’t look like they are from their photos. The reason they’re fitting into this theme is that their sound is one I’d associate with the “cool” high school prom rock band, from a movie like She’s All That, or Never Been Kissed, or 10 Things I Hate About You. Or the band the OC kids would’ve snuck out to see without telling their parents…
This Is Me Smiling – Goodbye to Each New Day (sample)
The song is up in full on their MySpace at the moment, along with a few others and, although they haven’t released anything since 2007, they posted on their blog a while back that they’d be releasing a follow-up to their self-titled debut sometime this year. No news yet.
I love the track because of the lyrics. These lyrics, specifically:
“There was nothing to anticipate / The car ride over was better than the date”
“I rang the doorbell, she answered right away / It was almost like she’d been waiting there all day”
They raise a smile, every time.

Anyone know where can I get my hands on this music?
I was at Cafe OTO yesterday to see The Paper Hats, who was (it’s one man, not poor grammar) just even more excellent than I wanted him to be – the songs were recognisable but not note-for-note copies of the recorded versions, making the live show a true experience – but I can’t rave about him again as I’ve already written about him. So…The Mariner’s Children.
No artist description on last.fm, less than 150 plays, no website, no e-footprint on any other music site I usually use – nothing other than a MySpace page.
The Mariner’s Children – MySpace
The vocals are pure folk. Distinctive, powerful, passionate but sweet and thoughtful at the same time. The instrumentals are acoustic and natural (banjo, mandolin, accordian, glockenspiel alongside the more usual drums and guitars.)
Track of the night for me, was “Waltz For a Sleeping Lover”, which has a style that reminds me of Sam Amidon and his American prairie-folk sound, and also loved “It Carved Your Name Into The Ground” which has a lot more energy and vigour. In short: Every minute of it was excellent.
I’m so glad they’re playing again soon and that, purely by chance, I’m going. Here are their upcoming London dates:
27th October, Roundhouse Emerging Proms
3rd November, Ronnie Scott’s
11th November, Oh! Inverted World at The Old Queen’s Head
No picture, as no album.

Phantogram - Eyelid Music
Another one from the WAH emerging playlist – I hadn’t heard of them until the playlist but a bit of digging has revealed that another of my current favourite bands, Post War Years, are supporting them in Bristol this coming Tuesday (or you can catch them sin PWY at The Fly this Sunday).
Phantogram – When I’m Small
The band are Joshua Carter and Sarah Barthel of NYC and this track is from their September 2009 album, Eyelid Movies, released on BBE.
When I’m Small has an electro-experimental vibe, and sounds to me like the creation that would emerge if Little Dragon and Autolux were locked in a studio for a week to fight out their respective influences – floaty curiosity with a darker, alluring edge.
It isn’t all exactly like this. As Far As I Can See (spotify link) has more of a hip-hop/soul feel to it and Mouthful Of Diamonds (MySpace) is quite indie-pop, similar in style to Metric.
I can’t go this week but their MySpace says they’re back in November so I’m thinking I’ll try then. Another one for the wishlist…
