Cherry Brakewells
I know I’ve written about this band before so I apologise for the repetition but I went to see them at the Monto last night and they absolutely rocked the house so I wanted to post the link to their MySpace again:
I’d heard a few of their tracks before on their site so knew they had a sixties rock edge to their sound but these chicks would have kicked @ss centre-stage at Woodstock 1969.
Shay May is a vocal powerhouse and lead guitarist Anna Calvi (I think that’s her name)’s riffing was reminiscent of the great Hendrix himself. There’re some tracks up on their MySpace and, although excellent, they pale in comparison to the full-volume live performance – raw, sexy, edgy – the Cherries are immense.
Highlight for me was the Destiny’s Child-Pearl Jam cover - crazy-beautiful as making cake out of cheese and chocolate.
UPDATE 12/04 : This is it!! Audio isn’t great but it’ll give you an idea… Cherry Brakewells – Survivor @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZapirMIc84
Gee whizz, Nish – that was a real humdinger of a show, huh? Gosh darn it if that wasn’t one of the best Indie acts this year!
What your readers don’t know us that I had to drag you to it – you were all like, ‘they’re rubbish’, ‘I don’t like their ridiculous hair’ and ‘that little one won’t be able to play the guitar’. Lucky for you I was all like ‘No, they’re wicked’, ‘don’t disrespect the ‘fro’ and ‘she has a name don’t you know’ and then I told you all of their names and gave you a YouTube link.
:-p
Yes, Bilal. That’s exactly how it happened.
(????!!!?)
