Recap – April 2009

Cat Power – The Greatest

April 29, 2009

Back to my melancholy ponderings after the sunshine-induced euphoria of last week…(it would seem that is what Arsenal going 1-0 down does to me).

Cat Power – The Greatest

Another ‘Smallville’ pick, Chan Marshall’s voice made me Shazam it. Full track is on the MySpace.

Have to go… second half has started.

The Seal Cub Clubbing Club – Slow-Motion Powerslides (In Dee)

April 28, 2009

I think I must’ve played this track at least 10 times today alone:

The Seal Cub Clubbing Club – Slow-Motion Powerslides (In Dee)

The link is to the last.fm page in case the audio goes up there at some point, but it’s currently up on their MySpace.

You have to give it about 1min 40s to really appreciate this song – but when it kicks in (about 30s prior), the heart-rending emotion in Nik Glover’s vocals and the eerie melody reminiscent of Sigur Rós can only be described as epic.

Lucky enough to see this band at the Monto tonight – they’re also supporting Juliette Lewis & the New Romantiques at the Hoxton Bar and Grill on 19 May.

Girl Power

April 27, 2009

Heard a really interesting and entirely unexpected version of ‘Poker Face’ on the radio this afternoon that got me thinking…pop music these days is oozing with strong, confident, independent women – a departure from the boy-band-strewn harmonies of the late nineties, early noughties.

So I thought I’d post a selection of my favourites:

And in case you thought I was a hater….with male support (or…guidance?):

Finally – the ultimate girl power track:

Any glaringly obvious absences were intentional. :p

Camden Crawl

April 24, 2009

In anticipation of this weekend’s crawling of Camden I’m just going to post a few MySpace musics of bands I would like to see…or am seeing ;)

Some I’ve posted before so apologies for the slight repetition.

Also some crawl-related spotify playlists courtesy of @thiswayup

That is all.

Weezer – Buddy Holly

April 22, 2009

Bah! More happy music. This crazy English weather is screwing with my flow…(!!)

Weezer – Buddy Holly

Way back when I first heard of Weezer in the early nineties, my brother and I used to crack up at the end of the video. Every time.

Here are some more (equally happy) tracks, from the 2001 release, ‘Weezer‘ :

“It’s not so good, Al….”. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha…

Interpol – Evil

April 21, 2009

Been reading a bit about this track on t’internet and I think I heard it on the first series of Grey’s Anatomy but I’m not 100% sure. It would seem it’s about some not at all nice stuff so I’m not going to go into it, but rather ignore the meaning completely and instead mention the ominous guitar intro. I thought this was R.E.M when I first heard it but no, it’s Interpol.

Interpol – Evil

The link above is to the Last.fm page but the video is of some guy who doesn’t appear to be part of Interpol playing the bass. So here’s a youtube link to the official video and their MySpace instead.
